I have yet to visit a police station in America. And, while I’m sure some liberties are taken when depicting a police station or precinct in a sprawling American metropolis on television, adding holding pens and grumpy detectives to a large open plan room that might be confused with journalists’ desks at a bustling newspaper, even a modest depiction, closer to the truth, would make Nuuk Police Station look like a tiny post office on the very edge of the map.

This, I believed, was a good thing.

Kaze would be unlikely to irritate more than a handful of my colleagues, and fewer still if I could catch her.

“Go,” Duneq said, as Kaze skirted around him and headed up the stairs rather than past Duneq and along the corridor to the canteen.

We might have contained her in the canteen, and possibly even distracted her with food. But Kaze was obviously in the mood for an adventure, and while resting in the company of Maratse, she had recharged.

I took the stairs two at a time.

Duneq huffed after me, surprising me with his commitment to help, but worrying me at the same time as the stairs defeated him and he shouted for me to go on without him. He might have said something about catching up, but it could just as easily have been catching hell, and that there would be plenty of such in store for me if I didn’t catch and contain Kaze.

But as the first shouts and one surprised scream came from the open plan office to the right at the top of the stairs, I couldn’t help but remember that Igimaq had named his dog Kamikaze, and she was clearly living up to her name.

“It’s okay,” I said, as I charged into the office area. “She’s with me.”

Kaze skittered across the linoleum, and I could just imagine how difficult it was for her to gain purchase on the shiny floor, especially with her long claws. She nosed her way into a smaller office, ejecting the occupants as Kaze’s smell forced them to leave. One of them reached for a Taser, while the other had the presence of mind to shut the door, trapping Kaze inside.

“You can’t use that,” I said, as I caught up with my colleague as she primed the less-lethal weapon. It was still on trial and had yet to be approved for use by police in Denmark and Greenland, and I didn’t like to think what it might do to a dog, even a relatively big dog like Kaze.

“She stinks, Jensen,” my colleague said, and I just nodded. There was no denying it.

“I’ll have her out of here in a second,” I said.

I reached for the door handle, only to turn as Duneq huffed into the office. He scowled at my colleague with the Taser, and she quickly returned it to the cabinet and locked the door.

“It’s only going to be put down anyway,” she said, and received another scowl for her efforts.

“That’s not your decision to make, Hansen,” Duneq said.
